The Five Arts Centre is an establishment made up of a group of artists and producers in Malaysia. It was formed in 1984 and was aimed at promoting alternative art forms through the creative environment of the country. The centre was established by the group of artists in order to produce and promote the arts that encompass visual arts as well as performing arts which cover dance, music, theater and stage plays.The centre was formed and founded by established theatre directors Chin San Sooi and Krishen Jit as well as Marion D’Cruz, a renowned dancer and choreographer and since then, it has been working towards growing and crafting out an identity in these areas.
The current members of the Five Arts Centre are renowned artistes from Malaysia who have been instrumental in promoting and developing the performing arts of the country. Presently, the Five Arts Centre include 14 personalities who bring with them a wide range of experience and specialization including the likes of Anne James, Chee Sek Thim, Chew Kin Wah, Fahmi Fadzil, Ivy N. Josiah, Janet Pillai, June Tan, Kubhaer T. Jethwani, Lew Chee Seong, Mac Chan, Marion D’Cruz, Mark Teh, Ravi Navaratnam, and Suhaila Merican.
Five Arts have been working to create an environment which provides artistes and practitioners the avenue to experiment and express their works in various events. This include plays, dances as well as a workshops and seminars in these areas. Operating from its centre in Taman Tun Dr Ismail, it was the previous manager of the Arts Network Asia from 2004 to 2005 while Five Arts also launched the Krishen Jit Astro Fund to help assist artistic work by Malaysians.
