FIGURE OUT – Figurative Art from PETRONAS Art Collection at Galeri Petronas

Currently on show at the prestigious Galeri Petronas is the ‘Figure Out: Figurative Art from the Petronas Art Collection’ show. This show is the brainchild of curator Professor Dr Zakaria Ali wwhere it will run until 11 November 2012. It will be featuring 65 pieces of artworks from some of Malaysia’s most remarkable artists. This would be quite the show for the occasion where the nation is observing its 55th Anniversary of Merdeka as well as the Malaysia Day on September 16 where you will be able to comprehend the expressions of the artists who have contributed in their own unique ways to the development of the county’s culture and arts.

As the name implies, the Figure Out exhibition will fully focus on figurative artworks as they are depicted by the artists. There will be 65 pieces of truly compelling works on display where they are all classified into 4 areas. They are Self-Portraits, Leisure, Work and Politics which are themed around self-examining of the current society and its elements.

The show exudes the elements and trademark of Dr Zakaria, a professor in Art History where he has selected works from various eras and hence you will be able to see works from some of Malaysia’s old masters like Datuk Syed Ahmad Jamal, Datuk Chuah Thean Teng and a photograp by Almarhum Sultan Ismail of Terengganu dating as far back as 1958 as well as the more modern and contemporary artists like Anurendra Jegadeva and Zulkifli Yusoff.

Dr Zakaria is no stranger to the Malaysian art scene where he learnt fine art in Texas and holds a PhD from the prestigious Harvard University. Today, he is known for his works in the writing and painting areas in which he has written literature in both Bahasa Malaysia and English Language most of which have been widely read and published.
