Each year, the Young Contemporary Award comes around and provides the platform for emerging and new Malaysian artists to showcase their works to the public and for a chance to win this prestigious award. The Young Contemporary Award, often known as YoungComp is one of the few awards in the country which comes with a reputation and prestige.
Its original Malay title is Bakat Muda Sezaman and is organized by the National Visual Arts Gallery. It was first started back in 1974 and has pretty been a mainstay in the national gallerys calendar throughout the year ever since although it was missing for certain periods. In fact, this award has brought out the best of some of the most remarkable artists in Malaysia which has helped to open doors, bridge the artists with collectors and provide the scene for them to tell the world what they can do.
For the exhibition, the works of the finalists are put together at the gallery and one will surely expect a lot of different styles and techniques to be involved that include the types of mediums used, the way they are expressed as such while there are certain limitations to the size of the artworks.
