Penang, My Penang Solo Watercolour Painting Exhibition by Khoo Cheang Jin at Galeri Seni Mutiara


Currently going on at the Galeri Seni Mutiara in Penang is the latest solo show by renowned Malaysian watercolour artist Khoo Cheang Jin. The show will exhibit the latest works of the artists who has been known for his exemplary watercolour techniques that are so well-liked by his peers and art lovers around the region.

Khoo’s new works will feature mostly Penang’s popular city and landscapes that include the likes of the Teow Chew Clan House in Chulia Street, the St George’s Church, the Kek Lok Si Temple and Chew Jetty just to name a few.

A graduate of architecture from the University of New South Wales in Australia, Khoo’s knowledge of the architecture environment allows him to better understand the structures and build-up of the enactments he paints. This can be seen through many of his paintings which he puts in great perspective like the Beach St-Acheen St Corner House. Since graduating in 1963, Khoo has continued to pursue his love for the arts, something that he liked since childhood. He travels a lot where he carries his sketch pad that he draws his experience and inspiration from.

Khoo is a member of prominent societies like the Singapore Watercolour Society, the Malaysian Watercolour Organisation, the Penang Art Society as well as the Penang Watercolour Society. A winner of the Young Artist Award in the 1980 Penang Museum Annual Art Axhibition, eh also won the Highly Commended Award during the UOB Group’s 13th Painting National Day Youth Art Exhibition in Singapore in 1994.

Collected by a wide range of collectors that include corporate bodies and private galleries, Khoo was also previously among the 22 who participated in the ‘President Charity Art Exhibition – The President’s Watercolour Selection 1995’ show then. Apart from that, his works had also travelled to the likes of Japan and other countries in the region.
