To commemorate the inauguration of the new Interpr8 Art Space this May 11th, the gallery will be hosting the works of the late Nik Zainal Abidin (1933 – 1993). Nik Zainal is often referred to as the Painter of the Epics as he had always used the subject matter of the wayang kulit in his works.
The Kelantan-born self-taught artist is also highly respected for being one of the foremost painters who paint traditional Malay art that depict stories of the Ramayana and many others. His works are very much in the characters and aesthetics of Wayang Kulit. His paintings are rich in colours where his interplay of this element is unique in his own special way.
Most of his works are done in watercolour and oil paint where the show will be featuring Nik Zainals depiction of the characters commonly used in Wayang Kulit. In combining this traditional craft with contemporary methods, Nik Zainal shows that the intertwining of 2 eras of arts could be so well integrated that it creates such an exciting balance that not many artists today is capable of. This show will involve his works on paper while there are oil paintings as well as some of his Islamic calligraphy works too.
