The University of Malaya Art Gallery is hosting the solo exhibition of Associate Professor Madya Dr Abdul Jalil Othman. The show is entitled Jendela Jiwa or when translated means Window to the Soul. According to the renowned artist, it was the mantra While you sleep, I paint that inspired him to organize his solo exhibition at the gallery.
Dr Abdul Jalil is currently a lecturer from the Universiti of Malayas Department of Language and Literary Education where he said that he did his painting in the wee hours of the morning, usually between 2 and 5am. His latest series of works were created using acrylic paint on canvas where he found the night time to be most inspirational which explains the adoption of the mentioned mantra.
In juggling between his academic responsibilities and art, he went to bed by 10pm and then wakes up to work on his paintings. Essentially, it is the passion for something that led him to successfully complete his series of work. Some of the works have to be painted outside the house as they were too big and hence, Dr Abdul Jalil had to work around weather conditions and curious neighbours. The exhibition was launched by former Chief Secretary to the Government, Tan Sri Abdul Halim Ali.
