The a2 Gallery in Penang will be hosting the solo exhibition by Malaysian contemporary artist Tan Kai Sheuan. Fondly known only as Sheuan, the show will be featuring his latest works with an introduction to his previous body of work which can be quite different while providing the viewer with an insight of his artistic journey.
With Seriously Superficial, Sheuan builds on something different from his previous body of work which stemmed from a self-reflective yearn for a change. One thing for sure, his signature is still very evident although he breaks away from his previous more comfortable subject matter.
This new series of work is a lot more literal in many ways. Sheuan has stripped down his works to the bar minimum so that the viewer need not make any additional interpretations but take it as he paints it. He expresses himself in the most straightforward way with Seriously Superficial where he tries to capture a feeling instead of a scenario or a moment as many artists like to do.
He hopes that his art will speak to the audience in a sense of calmness the way silent films do and there is a lot of silence in these works. Hence, it sort of creates the environment where the audience is not really needed to interact.
Opening Hours: Daily – 10.00am to 6.00pm
