The prestigious Galeri Petronas in Suria KLCC is currently hosting the solo exhibition of one of the most illustrious Malaysian contemporary artists Zulkifli Yusoff. The show is entitled Zulkifli Yusoff: MERDEKA! A Work in Progress and as the name implies set as a simple reminder about the Malaysian identity which is so often overlooked.
Zulkifli is one of the former artist-in-residence of Galeri Petronas, a privilege he underwent in 2003. A recipient of the National Academic Award, it was the highest award achieved by any practicing artist in the national education field, and today, his installation work is to commemorate the currently on-going Merdeka and Malaysia Day celebrations as well as the 20th anniversary of Galeri Petronas.
According to the artist, the works are not on display as stories but more as an interactive means for the audience to decode what he has to say. Hence, it is in his works that exude the spirit of Merdeka, which in many ways have become a somewhat forgotten value in todays everyday Malaysian life.
The mission statement of this show is to encourage harmony and prosperity and the idea of shared aspirations through his installation artwork is presented in their best and most trademarked forms.
