Solo Exhibition – Tong Tana: The Penan Territory – 25th March 2013 – 21st May 2013

The Metro Fine Art gallery is currently hosting a solo exhibition entitled ‘Tong Tana: The Penan Territory’ by Tan Wei Kheng. The artist will be showcasing the Penan people of Sarawak. The works of the Sarawak born artist will be featuring his childhood memories by focusing on the facial expression of the Penan people.

Through his childhood in the East Malaysian state and more so from his hometown in Marudi, he has been fascinated with the people who came with their unique tattoos. He said that since his first encountered with the Penang people, he has been going all out to capture their unique beauty through his art.

That was back in the early 1990s when he had no knowledge of the community’s hardship. It was only in recent years when the internet and newspapers started to report about the Penan’s plight that he became aware.

He then found out that the Penans are actually very friendly people where they are all very happy to share their culture and background. In fact, Tan found them to be very peace-loving and everything is shared among them, regardless of gender.

He spent some time with the Penans where he captured pictures and paint them later. The self-taught artist is known for his detailed strokes and unique methods of painting and that is clearly showcased in this exhibition.

Opening Hours: Mondays to Fridays: 11.30am – 5.00pm, Saturdays: 11.00am – 4.00pm.
