The Penang State Art Gallery is currently hosting a solo exhibition entitled Through his mind’s eyes: Tan Chiang Kiongs retrospective exhibition which will be showcasing 81 paintings of this remarkable Malaysian artist.
The works are collected from the 1960s to the present day which recognized the lifetimes effort and passion for art. Chiang Kiong, who is 81 this year has not stopped nurturing students in art for decades now where he is currently the Dean of the arts faculty in the Chung Ling Private High School.
He has been involved in promoting art education for many decades now and through is capacity as an art teacher in the school in Penang where he was one of the co-founders of the internationally renowned Penang Watercolour Society.
This would be an interesting show that will feature his exemplary techniques of integrating Chinese and Western methods. He received the prestigious Salut 55 award from the National Visual Arts Gallery in September this year in conjunction of the gallerys 55th anniversary celebrations. There will be his watercolour landscape paintings as well as his more recent works that use acrylic paint. This is truly a remarkable achievement for the artist who only had his first solo exhibition in 1996 at the age of 63 after many years of being in the art scene, devoting most of his life to the academics of art.
