The Drama of Kang Tables exhibition at Gandhara at Ampang Gallery

From September 29th to October 14th, spend some time indulging in furniture design at Gandhara @ Ampang Gallery. This is where the exhibition ‘The Drama of Kang Tables’ would be held which will showcase some of the most intricate designs in furniture the world had ever seen which have been used for decades and is now available for the modern living individual.

Designed to look like a coffee table, this furniture is a great piece of addition in the home which can be used to entertain the guests after a meal. Ideal for a ‘get-together’, especially for tea of coffee, Kang tables are known to be designed to be long and low which is usually placed in the middle of the couch or a sofa set, very much like how coffee tables are placed today. However, the striking element of Kang Tables is that they are more ‘traditional’ in design and exudes a certain taste of history and character.

This shows that using low tables to place beverages and light snacks is not entirely a modern practice in which it actually dated back to the early mat-level cultured in China. This was when the common practice of dining and reading were mainly carried out on the floor until the Song Dynasty in which sitting on high chairs and tables were practice. However, sitting on floors were still practiced even after that.

Today, Kang tables follow the tradition that has been adopted for so many centuries and the designs are still very much in favour. They are ornamental furniture placed in homes while they are still very much functional. Modern living requires exquisite design in taste and such, hence the adoption of using Kang Tables have become quite a unique element and this can be experienced in the exhibition.
