Henry Butcher Art Auction 2012 – Event Coverage & Result

Held at MAP @ Publika in White Box, the Henry Butcher Art Auction 2012 was held recently on 6th May 2012. Registration for bidders started at 11.00am and by 12.30pm, the auction hall was almost filled to the brim.

The organizer was extremely accommodating where they added more chairs to ensure everyone got a seat. At 1.00pm, the event started and despite the additional seats, some of the guests had to stand behind the hall as there were more than expected.

The organizers said that the auction will begin and hoped that everyone will have a good time bidding for their masterpieces.

It was a hilarious scene when the first painting that was shown on the screen was ‘The Scream’ by Vincent Van Gogh where the auctioneer said would start at RM10. After the light comical relief, the auction was underway and there were no stopping the bidders.

One can see that there were about a hundred bidders in the hall while 4 telephone operators were on duty to accept telephone (absentee) bids. Some paintings were sold quite quickly while a numbered few went on for a few rounds before the highest bidder won.

Bidding prices started lower than expected

One can expect an eventful day as it has always been with Henry Butcher Art Auctions where the guests came to bid for art pieces that they liked and there were many available with price starting from RM8,000.

For anyone who knows Malaysian art, it can be said that most of the artworks being auctioned were underpriced which meant that they were very much affordable. To say the least, Ivan Lam’s painting was auctioned off at RM17,600, which is only a fraction of what his paintings would sell in the current art market.

Another painting was Beach Street Penang by Peter Liew where the bidding stopped at RM22,000 which was under the reserved price and hence, it had to be sold at RM23,000 in order to complete the deal.

Eng Tay’s ‘Day End (1995)’ painting received the most bids where it was expected to be sold between RM28,000 to RM38,000 but respond was so overwhelming that a bidder finally won the deal for RM60,000.

This could still be considered quite a steal as the legendary Eng Tay’s paintings today would surely be worth more than that. And when the most prized painting came about, it would raise everyone’s interest. The piece by Datuk Ibrahim Hussein, which was expected to fetch a price between RM800,000 to RM1,200,000 was sold for RM797,500.00.

There were several known people in the art scene that attended the Henry Butcher Art Auction that ranged from gallery owners to renowned collectors while some of the artists too were present.

The paintings were auctioned off at an average of 5 minutes per piece and by 4.00pm, all the artworks were sold to their prospective new owners. It was truly an artistic event where most of the bidders bought what they liked and went home satisfied with owning a new classical piece of Malaysian art.

Total Sales for the auction is RM4,007,300.00.
