The Sabah Art Gallery is as its name implies, the art gallery of the Sabah state government. It was opened and established in 1984. As an art gallery, it is aimed at offering the space for art and culture to be showcased to the visiting members of public.
Services and function
The Sabah Art Gallery functions as the space and body that collects and preserve the local arts. It is managed under the Sabah Cultural Board under the Ministry of Tourism, Culture and Environment. Over the years, the gallery has been able to grow and provide the platform for both local and foreign artists to showcase their works while offering the environment for culture and craft to intertwine.
Today, it has acquired more than 3,000 pieces of art works in its permanent collection which include all types of medium. This includes sculptures, installations, paintings and others which are mostly from local artists and practitioners. Within the gallery are 2 spaces which are provided to be the platform for shows and events totaling to more than 12 per year within its location in the heart of Kota Kinabalu in Jalan Penampang spanning across its 1.7 hectare land.
