The Universiti Malaya Art Gallery is located on the fifth floor of the majestic Chancellery Building a the University of Malaya. Known as UMAG, this gallery is located within the institute of higher learning where it offers a space for exhibition and where art is fully evident.
Background of UMAG
The gallery has a great view that overlooks the lake of the university. The design of the space was by Zuraini Anuar where it has a total space of about 1,500 square meter. The idea of having an art gallery in the university came from Tan Sri Dr Ghauth Jasmon, the former Vice-Chancellor of UM where he wanted this to be the icon of the institute.
This is where local artists are able to showcase their works to visitors and students. With more than 300 pieces of works in the collection, the effort continues on till today which has been carried out since the 1950s. today, it has works by some of the top artists in Malaysia and abroad including those from Abdul Latiff Mohidin, Chuah Thean Teng and Syed Ahmad Jamal, to name a few. Besides that, it has its own resident artists and many who have been here including Yusof Gajah and Juhari Said.
