Malaysian Institute of Art

The Malaysian Institute of Art or MIA is one of the oldest art institutions in Malaysia. It is a private institution of higher learning which was established in 1967 and is essentially a non-profit higher art education institute where it remains as one of the most established art institutes not only within the country but in the region as well.

Accredited by the MOA

The courses in MIA are accredited by the Ministry of Higher Education where they offer a wide range of 3 year Diploma courses which are fully focused in the creative industries. Apart from art and design, MIC also offers courses in Music as well although the former remains as its main forte.

With the demand and advancement of technology, MIA has adopted IT into its course thereby making their courses industry ready and producing graduates who are not only well-versed in the many facets of art but also in digital format as well.

However, it must be noted that MIA has always been regarded with the highest respect among art practitioners and members of the industry through its tradition and heritage of the development of the Malaysian art scene. While some of its teaching methods have been seen to be more ‘conventional’ and traditional, it has not failed as being one of the best educators in the arts throughout the years.

Worldwide recognition

They have affiliations with many universities overseas where graduates from MIA are able to continue and finish their degrees in institutions in the United Kingdom, the United States, Italy, New Zealand, Australia, China and Taiwan.

Students in MIA are able to undertake various courses in the faculties in MIA at its Taman Melawati campus where one can start at the Foundation level and then proceed on to a major in the areas of Graphic Design, Illustration, Interior Design, Industrial Design, Music and Fine Art which is one of the major specializations here. Apart from that, MIA also offers courses on fashion and textile design.

Essentially, MIA has long standing history of producing some of the most renowned artists in Malaysia. Such artists like Phuan Thai Meng, Chan Kok Hooi and Yau Bee Ling were all former graduates of MIA where they have charted extremely remarkable careers in fine art.

Specialise in Fine Arts

One of the most popular courses that MIA is renowned for would be their Diploma in Fine Art where the courses are guided and taught by industry practitioners and very experienced individuals who are also artists in their own accord.

Other artists who have already established their own personas and careers in art include Wong Chee Meng, Chong Choon Woon, Puah Kim Hai and Wong Perng Fey, all of whom have already moved up the ladder through their own signature of art work that have been widely exhibited locally and internationally.

Where this is concerned, the artworks have already travelled to many parts of the world through group and solo exhibitions while some graduates of MIA has chosen to further their studies in the United States, United Kingdom and China.
