The late Peter Harris is one of the most established foreign artists in Malaysia. Not to be confused with contemporary artist Peter D Harris of Canada, our very own Peter has been producing art in his native in the United Kingdom as well as in Malaysia. Here is where one is able to appreciate a foreigner’s perspective into the lives and society of Malaysia. His education came through from the West of England Art Academy in 1939 where one of his earlier solo exhibition in Malaysia was at the National Art Gallery in 1960 in the Retrospective Exhibition show.
Peter Harris’s Exhibitions
He passed away in 2009 leaving behind a legacy of art which is unmatchable by many modern artists today. A Peter Harris Memorial Exhibition was held in his honour and memory in 2009 at Art Salon @ Seni to commemorate a lifetime of his art work where he has been involved as an art superintendent with the Federation of Malaya from 1951 to 1960 and then in Sabah from 1962 to 1967. He was also the founder of the Wednesday Art Group. Peter was awarded the MBE in 1963 and his works have been inducted into the permanent galleries of major art spaces like the Singapore Art Museum and the National Art Gallery of Malaysia, among many others.
